Since 2013, we have seen a lot more aggression from Google to address the web link spam that has been plaguing the web. The launch of the Penguin algorithms have seen link spam heavily targeted, as well as Google providing manual action penalties on websites that have previously or currently engaging in link spam activities to manipulate their SEO results.
Many website owners are unsure whether they should review or take action on their website’s link profiles, whether or not they have been hit or not.
The rule of thumb is that if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. But at the same time you can monitor these links to assess how valuable they are to your website’s link portfolio and to further identify any others that may be spam.
If the links do appear to be spammy, you will want to highlight them and consider getting them removed or ignored via Google’s Disavow Tool. By submitting them to Google’s Disavow tool, you are asking Google to ignore these links as a part of your website’s link portfolio. But this doesn’t guarantee that Google will take action. Google says that they want to see ‘considerable effort’ with the removal of bad links. This means getting the links completely removed.
Getting the links removed can cost a lot of money and resource. It tends to be a very heavy investment. If you are going to engage in this activity, you need to assess whether it is worthwhile for your website over the long term or whether it would be wiser to begin a new website.
So, should you do an SEO link cleanup?
- If your website has received a manual penalty for links violations, then yes you should do an SEO link cleanup.
- If your website hasn’t received a manual penalty, but you know you have done activities to cause link violations. You should do a link review and monitor the links that may need to be cleaned up in the future.
- Your website hasn’t received a manual penalty and you are unsure of whether or not your site has any bad links? It doesn’t hurt to do a link review, but if you haven’t received any notifications then you won’t need to submit any link actions.
